Client Alberta Ballet | Location Calgary, AB | Size 7,432m2 | Completion 2011
Synthesizing the new and historic in an exceptional training and performance space for young learners and professionals.
The Alberta Ballet has made an international name for itself as a great innovator through the creation and performance of critically acclaimed interpretations of the music of contemporary artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Joni Mitchel and Elton John. In addition to a successful ballet company, they operate a ballet school that trains future generations of professional dancers through an immersive program, as well as part time, recreational students. Currently the School and the Company function in inadequately-sized facilities that are separately located.
GEC completed a feasibility study to determine if the Ballet’s plans for consolidation of all their operations and plans for the next 20 years of growth could be located on their current Company site. The site is in a spectacular location on 18th Avenue SW, adjacent St. Mary’s Cathedral, and backing onto the Elbow River.
The new headquarters for the Alberta Ballet will house all of their activities in one facility that makes the most of its site, and will provide a lively, active venue to fuel their creativity. The building will incorporate the historical sandstone and brick Canadian Northern Railway Station, and will feature state-of-the-art dance studios that front 18th Avenue, and studios that face the Elbow River and Lindsay Park beyond. Between the studios will be the dressing rooms and facilities to support Company and School, as well as the Wardrobe Department.
