Armstrong Spallumcheen Arena
Client City of Armstrong/Spallumcheen Township | Location Armstrong, BC | Size 3,500m2 | Completion 2005
Showcasing the importance of the wood and timber industry in interior British Columbia.
The Armstrong-Spallumcheen Arena is a multi-purpose facility that imaginatively and resourcefully integrates wood in lieu of many traditional construction systems. This legacy effort demonstrates community pride, serving to promote building solutions that highlight and ultimately benefit the local industry.
A unique sighting strategy takes advantage of the natural lay-of-the-land, nestling the building into the wooded hillside. This successfully splits participant and spectator access to the facility, allowing participants to enter at-grade from the parking area, and spectators to enter off of the outdoor pre-function area at the top of the public plaza. The building’s intimate relationship with the site is further bolstered by full-length clearstory windows on the buildings' east side, providing indirect day lighting into the heart of the facility and discrete views of the surrounding 80’ evergreens from the ice surface.
The arena features an NHL-sized ice surface; a 450-seat concourse complete with barrier free viewing areas, washroom facilities, and concession area; an oversized home team dressing room; four conventional dressing rooms, and one auxiliary dressing room; administration offices and ticketing facilities; and a multi-purpose room.
