Remington YMCA Wins!

Last night the Remington YMCA won a Wood WORKS! Alberta Prairie Wood Design Award! Winning in the category of Recreational Wood Design, the award for this urban recreation facility recognizes the recipient’s ability to push the boundaries of wood in construction.

The Remington YMCA uses wood as its main structural element, creating a warm and welcoming environment for its users.  Wood also provides two architectural advantages: first, it can be an economical solution for long span structures over gymnasiums and swimming pools; and second, wood’s natural preservative properties make it optimal for use in humid pool environments. Congratulations to the team!

Rocky Ridge Recreation Facility – The Largest Timber Roof in North America

Rocky Ridge Recreation Facility’s timber roof design was featured in the January/February 2017 issue of Construction Business magazine. The largest timber roof in North America it is constructed with over 30,000 square feet of glulam. We designed a place for people to gather and play by combining essential health, wellness, and community services underneath one roof.

The expansive timber roof links these program elements and responds to the individual requirements of each activity. Glulam was selected for its technical and aesthetic merits – the geometric complexity of the project required the use of a structural material that had the ability to be customized while creating a vibrant, welcoming community destination.

Rocky Ridge Recreation Facility Presentation

Rocky Ridge Recreation Facility Presentation

As the largest wood roof in North America, the design of the Rocky Ridge roof required a dedicated and innovative team to make it a success. The team, including PCL Construction Management, RJC Consulting Engineers, ISL Engineering, and us, GEC, will be sharing our collaborative experiences of our journey from early hand sketches to cranes and a roof.

Join us Friday October 7th to see the facility under construction (PPE gear is required) and hear from the people who are making this facility happen. Make sure to register to secure your spot!
