Flames Community Arenas

Inspiring greatness – varsity and community athletes under one roof.

The new community arena was the result of an initiative to provide Calgary with more ice time and to serve as home ice to the Mount Royal University Cougars. The project was a partnership between the City of Calgary, Calgary Minor Hockey, and Mount Royal University which began with a detailed study to identify the best option for adding new sheets of ice to the existing twin-sheet arena. For almost 10 years our team worked closely with the South West Arena Society and user groups to develop solutions that served the community and varsity teams. The expansion added an NHL ice surface which includes seating for 250 spectators, five community changes rooms, and team rooms for the MRU hockey teams.

As a community facility integrated into an existing neighbourhood, the project evolved through numerous meetings with planning officials, community members, and residential groups. Specific issues that were resolved at this stage included parking integration with surrounding facilities, site sustainability, access to adjacent parks and playfields, regional pathway integration, enhanced pedestrian experience and the Museum of Regiments Remembrance Day access.
