The King’s University Master Plan sets out a framework for the development of the campus from 700 full time equivalent (FTE) students to 2,000 FTE. Utilizing the University’s Vision 2020 as a guiding document, GEC completed a series of studies which examined how to grow the campus by identifying short, medium and long term priorities. The master plan established a rigor and order to the campus that previously did not exist. Located in a repurposed convention hotel, the campus has grown through ad hock additions and isolated development.
Our first step was to establish a new critical mass on the south side of the campus in the form of the new Centre for Excellence in Science. Coupled with a health and wellness centre, and future theater, the south end of the campus will support the institutions commitment to community outreach and provide a new public face to the institution. Secondly, we developed a new internal quadrangle and student hub within the existing convention hotel. This is known as the Centre for Student Success and Community, a new heart to the campus. It will provide students with a single location and touchpoint throughout their career at King’s. It will be the first place students go to register, they will continue to go there for student activities and support services, and will return there to visit alumni relations and advancement. To meet the anticipated student growth, we established an addition to the North Academic Block, which will include new flexible classroom space. Lastly, to link these spaces a new external quadrangle is carved from the removal of an underutilized administrative wing.
GEC is continuing to work on the three key short term priorities through a programming and schematic design exercise. As a self-funded institution, we have met regularly with King’s head of donor relations and advancement to help develop cases for each priority, which they can take to potential sponsors.
