Andrew Afonso

Associate

Andy has always been driven by curiosity—about people, places, and how design can shape the way communities live, move, and connect. A registered architect in Alberta and an Associate at GEC, he leads teams on projects ranging from recreation centres to major transportation infrastructure, always keeping people at the heart of the work. Since first joining the firm as a student in 2015, Andy has grown into a trusted leader who balances vision with practicality, ensuring projects not only meet expectations but often surpass them.

Andy earned both his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Architecture and Art History and his Master of Architecture from the University of Toronto. Over his career at GEC, he’s guided projects across Alberta, including Calgary, Edmonton, Jasper, Spruce Grove, Fort McMurray, and beyond. Whether designing a civic hub or an LRT extension, he grounds his work in values that matter deeply to him: inclusivity, accessibility, sustainability, and a reflection of the people and culture the project serves.

Colleagues know Andy as both thoughtful and grounded. He has a knack for keeping the big picture in focus while navigating the realities of getting things done. In early design phases, he thrives on creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration, helping ideas move from possibility to something tangible. He also has a gift for making the complex approachable—setting clear expectations, fostering open communication, and sprinkling in just enough humour to keep teams motivated and clients at ease. For Andy, the most rewarding moments often come during community engagement sessions, when voices of all ages and perspectives spark unexpected ideas that reshape a design.

Outside of work, Andy is just as engaged in movement and connection. An avid cyclist, he loves exploring the city with his family, drawing inspiration from how infrastructure shapes people’s daily experience. Travel, cooking, volunteering, and even hands-on building projects keep him balanced and energized. He also keeps his Portuguese heritage alive through language, conversation, and culture.

At his core, Andy is guided by an exploratory mindset: keep asking questions, stay open to new perspectives, and never lose sight of the people a project is meant to serve.
