David Minke

Associate

David has been with GEC for nearly two decades. In that time, he's worn many hats—starting as a student architect and growing into his current role as Associate and lead designer for sport and recreation projects. With a Bachelor of Arts in Urban and Regional Studies from the University of Lethbridge and a Master of Architecture from the University of Toronto, David blends academic insight with real-world experience across a range of meaningful public spaces.

While many architects shift into managerial roles over time, David has remained closely connected to the design process itself. His hands-on approach—sketching by hand, building models, mentoring new designers—is grounded in his belief that great architecture lives at the intersection of art and science. He thrives in the early stages of a project, when ideas are still fluid and filled with possibility. One of his favourite memories is from the early design phase of Calgary’s Rocky Ridge YMCA, where he returned to traditional tools—pens, paper, and physical models—to shape a highly sculptural idea into something real.

David sees his work as part of a bigger picture. He's deeply invested in nurturing GEC’s creative culture and played a key role in launching the GEC University lecture series to bring fresh voices and ideas into the studio. He also mentors intern architects, valuing open dialogue and the idea that good design comes from dissolving hierarchy and inviting everyone to the table.

Outside of work, David is a maker at heart. He sculpts, skateboards, and listens to hip-hop, keeping his creativity flowing both on and off the clock. If he weren’t an architect, he’d likely be a full-time artist. In many ways, he’s found the best of both worlds—channelling artistic exploration into public spaces that people use and enjoy every day.
