Shayne Yap

Associate

As an Associate Interior Designer at GEC, Shayne brings over a decade of experience and a meticulous eye for detail to every project he touches. With a Diploma in Interior Design and NCIDQ certification, Shayne blends creativity, technical precision, and deep user empathy to shape spaces that are both efficient and inspiring.

Over his nine years at GEC, Shayne has worked on a wide range of projects—from post-secondary facilities and workplace design to multi-family developments, recreation centres, and small-scale renovations across Alberta and beyond. No matter the scale, he sees interiors as the point of human connection in architecture—the spaces where people live, work, and engage most intimately with design.

Shayne’s process begins with understanding how people will use a space and how each detail supports that experience. He’s energized by space planning, modelling, and rendering—by the challenge of finding the most elegant and functional layout and capturing its atmosphere through visual storytelling. His design philosophy centers on user-focused spaces that balance efficiency with aesthetics, where every material and line serves a purpose.

Colleagues describe Shayne as thoughtful, hardworking, and clear in both design and communication. He values transparency and collaboration, often presenting multiple pathways to ensure every decision is informed and intentional. For him, the most rewarding moments are seeing a project realized—when months of iteration, coordination, and creativity come together in a cohesive, beautiful space.

Outside of the studio, Shayne’s discipline and curiosity extend into other parts of his life. A self-professed health and fitness enthusiast, he applies the same mindset of efficiency and balance to daily routines—from structured workouts and weekly meal prep to ensuring his kids laugh every single day. He once played lead guitar in a melodic death metal band and recorded two full-length albums—a reminder of his lifelong passion for creative expression and rhythm.

Shayne’s guiding philosophy is simple but powerful: stay hungry for growth, stay open to others’ ideas, and keep designing spaces that enhance the way people live, work, and feel.
