The Music and Sound Building embraces performance art acting as a venue for expression, innovation, and creation. The centre includes practice, rehearsal and performance studios for the musicians of the Banff Centre. The original music huts were retained as a central feature of the Music Program maintining the character of the Banff Centre. Formidable acoustical requirements for a great variety of spaces combined with an extremely tight budget led to the extensive participation of the acousticians in the design process and throughout the documentation phase of the project. The excellent acoustical results achieved throughout the facility attest to the inclusive approach of the design build team.

Rolston Hall contains 175 audience seats, which could be expanded to 200 to suit future needs. A prime consideration in the design of the facility was to minimize the impact of the building on the natural landscape. In order to achieve this, the building was designed to sit over a new parkade sited on an existing parking lot. The Music & Sound Building is oriented to focus on a peaceful interior courtyard while providing framed views outwards to the surrounding mountains and landscape.
