The Northeast (NE) LRT extension began in 2006 as a planning and design exercise of the station and utility complex area at the McKnight-Westwinds site in Calgary, Alberta. The contract and scope was extended in 2009 to include two new station area plans and designs – Martindale and Saddletowne.
At each site, GEC was tasked with finding a community-supported solution that was appropriate in terms of scale, safety, and efficiency. This exploration included a study of the opportunities and constraints impacting each site, and an in-depth analysis of how people move into, out of, and through the areas. The stations and complex, completed in 2012, each contribute uniquely to their resident communities while respecting the specific needs of the communities.
