The aquatics centre faces the street, projecting the activity outwards to the community. It has a 6-lane 25m lap pool; a leisure pool with a current channel, vortex, and play feature; and spa and steam rooms. The leisure pool will also be used as a teaching pool. The design of leisure pools is significantly different from the design of competitive, diving, therapy, and other types of pools. Leisure pools provide amenities for all ages from toddlers to teenagers and young adults to seniors. Providing features for this broad spectrum of potential users is a challenge that GEC has overcome with the current design.

The aquatics, fitness, running track and gymnasium are visually open to each other and to the entrance atrium; this puts all activities on display and creates a sense of community within the building. A single control point separates the change rooms and activity areas from the public spaces and library branch.

This leisure centre includes the first universal change room in Alberta, a growing trend in the USA and Europe, in addition to the YMCA’s signature men’s and women’s Plus change rooms.

Designed to meet LEED Gold, a Combined Heat and Power co-gen system significantly reduces the operational cost of the facility, as well as the capital cost of boiler capacity and back-up generator.
