A major influence on the building’s form and massing was requirement for extensive daylighting to reduce energy costs and to enhance the internal environment. The requirement for daylighting was potentially a conflict with the extensive use of computers and monitors throughout the building.
An exterior light shelf system was developed to direct natural light to interior ceilings and from there indirectly to working surfaces. Two principal wings and stepped building areas maximize the amount of light entering the school, especially from transom light areas. To control glare and solar heat gain, an electrically operated shading system is incorporated into the clear storey windows
