Client Red Deer College | Location Red Deer, AB | Completion 2012

GEC Architecture completed the initial stages of Red Deer College’s Building Communities through Learning Component 2 project, which focuses on providing experiential learning environments to prepare students for practice in the healthcare and education sectors. The facility is located on the Red Deer College campus and integrates educational, health and wellness, athletics and recreational programs. The project included the design of 7 nursing labs (including a home care lab and mobility lab), a nursing simulation suite, 3 pharmacy technician labs, an early childcare lab and resource centre and a childcare demonstration centre.

In addition to serving multiple, varied user groups, the design was driven by a goal to supplement traditional classroom and laboratory spaces with less structured informal learning spaces that would promote alternative modes of learning; encourage interaction between academic groups and departments and with the community; and create an open, transparent educational and recreation facility to welcome the community and students.

The process included significant interaction with the client and various stakeholders, value management sessions including construction managers, project managers, Alberta Infrastructure and Alberta Education, and extensive user group workshops.
