University of Calgary – Professional Faculties Building
Legacy Project | Client University of Calgary | Location Calgary, AB | Completion 1993
Integrating law students, faculty and the legal community into one place.
The design was guided by long-term strategy and master planning objectives and resulted in a four-storey structure massed to allow winter sunlight to bathe the pedestrian mall to the north of the building. Each Faculty – Law, social Work, Nursing, and Environmental Design – required its own identity and entrance while maintaining the ability to expand and contract programs and related faculty areas.
The final design saw each faculty provided with specialized lecture and teaching spaces along with a full consortium of meeting and classroom spaces and offices for teaching staff and administration. The structure is extensively day-lit to minimize energy costs and provide a high-quality lighting environment for the users. The building incorporates communications raceways, a fibre optic backbone, and extensive and varied audio-visual systems.
