Village Square Leisure Centre
Client The City of Calgary | Location Calgary, AB | Size 19,000m2 | Completion 1983
GEC Architecture developed the program and architectural design for this recreation facility, receiving a design award from The Alberta Association of Architects upon its completion. The Village Square Leisure Centre is a multi-purpose facility providing recreational and social services to the surrounding suburban communities.
The concept of a 'shopping centre' of community services generated the building's design, with facilities informally arranged along two interconnected mall levels. From the mall, it is possible to view many of the activity areas, including the pool, the arenas, and the gymnasium. Given the variety of interior climates, GEC undertook extensive technical studies to resolve building envelope concerns.
