CLIENT Canadian Rockies Regional Division #12
LOCATION Canmore, AB
The Canmore School Board requested a variety of teaching spaces and a comprehensive ability to provide for the new Career and Technology Studies (CTS) programs. GEC Architecture worked closely with the Mount Rundle School Board and the educational staff to concurrently develop an educational and facility plan for the new high school. The facilitation process garnered community understanding and support with the result that the public plebiscite was passed.
An analysis of the high school curriculum with relationship to Alberta Education standards and specific Canmore requirements was undertaken. The involvement of students, teachers, parents, and community representatives was an important part of the initial design process, resulting in a design of individual components representing the unique qualities of the learning centres contained within. Outdoor education was a significant driver of the design, resulting in a strong emphasis on outdoor spaces and connections. The school is comprised of discreet learning centres, each with its own identity and character linked to common areas.
