The Chinook Transit Centre connects communities, supports mobility, and invites people to linger, move, and engage with the city.

When the City of Calgary set out to renew the aging Chinook LRT STation and Transit Centre, the goal was clear: transform a decades-old station into a vibrant, safe, and welcoming civic place that serves today’s riders and the city it is becoming.

At more than 30 years old, the original station was showing its age. The canopy renovation revealed a maze of existing conditions, from structural interfaces to traction power systems. Our team worked closely with the construction manager, resolving challenges in real time and uncovering design efficiencies that kept the project moving without delays.

The redevelopment introduced a universally accessible transit plaza that brings together the bus loop, LRT platform, and one of Calgary’s busiest pedestrian corridors. By replacing the former overhead station head with at-grade, signalized crossings, the station now connects seamlessly to surrounding neighbourhoods, linking communities that had long been separated by the tracks.

Heated bus shelters with temperature-controlled seats and tempered-glass protection make everyday commuting more comfortable, especially in Calgary winters. A new purpose-built bus station and upgraded platform envelope provide durability, safety, and clarity for riders.

Today, the Chinook LRT Station and Transit Centre is more than a stop on the line. It is a renewed urban anchor that supports mobility, walkability, and future transit-oriented growth along 61st Avenue.

“[GEC Architecture] designed a modern, efficient, customer-focused LRT station to fulfill the future needs of a growing city.”
