For decades, the Lister Centre towers have welcomed first-year students, shaping the start of their university experience. By the 2010s, aging systems and dated interiors limited comfort and accessibility, and the buildings no longer reflected the energy of campus life. Over three years, GEC worked with the university and its residents to renew Mackenzie, Henday, and Kelsey Halls, transforming them into inclusive, sustainable homes that support daily life and foster genuine connection.

Every aspect of student life was considered in the redevelopment. Renovations were carefully phased so residents could remain in place and share feedback as spaces evolved. Interiors were brightened and reconfigured to better support study, rest, and community. New lounges, kitchens, and study areas create natural places to gather, while upgraded systems improve comfort, accessibility, and energy performance.

Inclusive design features ensure the residence works for everyone. Gender-inclusive washrooms, accessible suites, and open communal areas create spaces where all students can feel comfortable and included. Photovoltaic panels generate renewable energy while providing natural shading and preserving outdoor views. Together, these improvements create a residence that supports daily life, reflects a commitment to sustainability, and fosters a strong sense of community.

Today, the Lister Centre is a vibrant part of campus life once again. Every space invites students to connect, recharge, and make it their own, creating a supportive home for their first year and the friendships that begin there.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet people. It’s a great community. A great way to get involved.”
