For elite athletes, advancing human performance, movement, and sport science knowledge are the keys to sustained success.

From children exploring movement in research programs to elite athletes training on high-performance courts, the Taylor Family Kinesiology Building is designed around people and activity. Open labs, clinical suites, and adaptable research spaces connect seamlessly, creating an environment where curiosity, learning, and wellbeing thrive.

The building’s metal-and-glass form supports evolving programs. Researchers can reconfigure labs for new studies, clinicians guide recovery in the concussion clinic, and athletes move effortlessly between training spaces. The design balances openness with human scale, making every space feel approachable and functional.

Cultural storytelling and Indigenous landscape elements are woven throughout the site in line with the University’s ii’ taa’poh’to’poh’ Indigenous Strategy. These features honour heritage, welcome diverse communities, and strengthen the building’s connection to the campus and surrounding environment.

Sustainability is integral to the design. Daylit labs reduce energy use, resilient landscaping manages stormwater, and energy-efficient systems support both the environment and the people who use the building. The facility is targeting LEED Gold certification.

When complete, the Taylor Family Kinesiology Building will be a hub for research, clinical care, and community engagement. Students, researchers, clinicians, and athletes will collaborate in flexible spaces designed to evolve with new discoveries, advancing human performance, sport science, and wellbeing on campus and beyond.

“The Faculty of Kinesiology has already earned a place among the top sport science schools in North America, and the time has come to expand its potential. The Taylor Family’s long-standing support and vision has truly helped make the extraordinary possible at UCalgary, and we look forward to opening this iconic new facility to further our leadership in human movement, sport, recreation, and wellness.”
