But as the region grew, the aging facility could no longer keep pace. The Town and County came together with a shared vision: build a modern, inclusive recreation hub that strengthens health, connection, and regional pride.
GEC responded with a comprehensive redevelopment that renews the existing centre while expanding it into a full multipurpose destination. A larger aquatics centre, new gymnasium, indoor walking track, and modernized arena and curling facilities significantly increase programming capacity, bringing more activities under one roof. Careful integration of new and existing structures allows the complex to feel unified—both familiar and fresh.

A phased construction strategy keeps key amenities, including aquatics, open until replacement spaces are complete, ensuring residents never lose access to essential programs. Behind the scenes, upgraded mechanical, electrical, and envelope systems enhance energy efficiency and long-term operations, extending the facility’s lifespan while reducing its environmental impact.
This project stands as a model of regional collaboration. By pooling resources and listening closely to community needs, Edson and Yellowhead County are creating a vibrant recreation centre that will serve generations to come—a place designed for movement, connection, and everyday belonging.

“This groundbreaking is an important milestone in the completion of the new YCE Multiplex. We’re very proud of our work together with the Town of Edson in the development of this facility. The facility’s new amenities and upgrades will benefit our region’s residents and highlights our commitment to working with our regional partners towards our community’s continued growth and development.”
