Nakî Transit Centre & Park and Ride

A human-centred approach delivered a transit solution that balances functionality, sustainability, and regional connectivity.

The Nakî Transit Centre & Park and Ride transforms daily commuting in St. Albert. Completed in 2020, this much-needed facility addresses the city’s long-standing need for a modern, efficient park-and-ride that connects St. Albert with Edmonton and the wider region. Designed with both immediate comfort and long-term growth in mind, the hub supports daily commuters while anticipating future transit expansions, including a potential LRT link.

The transit centre’s name stems from the Cree and Michif word “nakî,” which means “stop” or “stop here.” 

GEC worked closely with the City of St. Albert to turn an aging, underused transit centre into a welcoming, accessible public space. The transit centre features heated indoor waiting areas, public washrooms, Wi-Fi, bike facilities, and pedestrian-friendly landscaping. When technical challenges arose with the architectural concrete finish, we revised specifications, implemented mockups, and strengthened quality assurance—ensuring a durable and attractive result. We also adapted quickly to evolving needs, adding an operator washroom without affecting schedule or budget.

The Nakî Transit Centre & Park and Ride is designed to scale with the city’s growth. Expanded bus lanes and bays accommodate regional transit, while integrated urban design, public art-inspired seating, and sustainable landscaping enhance the commuter experience. This facility not only improves comfort and safety for daily users but also supports St. Albert’s long-term vision for a connected, sustainable transit network.
